PARTICIPATORY BUILDING OF THE DAMBANANG BANAL [altar or sacred shrine]
At the center of the room floats a living shrine, a ceremonial spirit boat, the ancient vessel of transit for the soul, carrying our prayers across the unseen waters between worlds. The spirit boat honors our Austronesian ancestors, and is actively transformed and brought to life through the physical contributions of objects, dance, and music and the intentions of everyone in attendance.
Attendees are encouraged to wear indigenous clothing, malong, tubao, etc. and contribute to the building of the dambanang banal [dumb-BUH-nang buh-NULL] with flameless candles, flowers, fresh aromatic botanicals, incense, rice & fruits for atang, as well as and photos, musical instruments to play, and/or other memorabilia of loved ones to be honored and remembered.
